No unread posts Redevelopment of the former Safeway/Morrisons site
Tower Hamlets council’s strategic development committee is due to hear a planning application within the next couple of months from Reef Estates Ltd, for the redevelopment of the former Safeway/Morrisons site in Gladstone Place, off Roman Road in Bow. The site has now been empty for more than two years, during which time shoppers have been forced to travel to other supermarkets miles away or use higher-priced local shops. Reef Estates’ plans include space for a ‘Tesco Metro’-sized supermarket and hundreds of new flats, most of which would be in a 10-storey tower block. Opponents argue this will dwarf homes in the Cardigan Road area and cause traffic and parking problems. But supporters say there is already the 22-storey Brodick Tower close by and that the proposed housing development is fundamental to the financial viability of the whole project. They say that without the tower, the supermarket will not go ahead. Post your views here
